Welcome. This is a car oriented sub-blog of Jalopnik. It is a place where common people can come to hear and be heard. Yet generally about 1/3 of the posts are not car related. That's nothing new. There's music, current events, attractive women, good morning/night posts, alcoholic beverages, random memes/humor, pop culture etc. or just flat out poorly written articles and rehash stories mixed in during the day.

And as for the entirety of that other 2/3 that is car related... it can't possibly interest everyone anyway. Cause I for sure don't have interest in every article on here.

So why does it really ruffle your feathers when you get a string of off topic (one liners! [TWO WORDS!]) all in one place? Does it take you more than 2 seconds to realize that two word title (and nothing more) post is not car related? Is your scroll wheel broken? Do you honestly find no humor in puns? Do you really have something more important than reading amateur car blog posts to do that the extra minute it takes to scroll down really matters?

Pro tip: Scroll down or hit that "PgDn" button until you see a big block of text under the title and next to the image. The big block of text is generally pretty easy to spot. It might be something you will maybe might perhaps read or just be a legit article you would have passed up anyway. Now that you know what to look for, is the image car related? If yes, read the title. Is the title car related? If yes, read the intro block of text and click on the article for the rest. Congratulations! You now know how to scan Oppo for interesting articles!

Had to look up the context. Looks like you committed the long-time cardinal sin of posting a long series of meaningless posts taking up the entire page within a half hour. That is full retard. Never go full retard.

I'm a long time oppositelocker and I've seen people make that mistake countless times, and even in the old days, it was shut down pretty quickly. Photo dumps are to be contained to a single thread (and in the old days, that meant putting them in replies), and series of entirely off-topic and meaningless posts were either not welcome at all or meant to be in one thread.

It's just a rule around here. Don't do it. Simple as that.

Hmmm... Starting to see a reason for this post here. Apology will be forthcoming, Manana.

There is no need to apologize. Or should I say... oppo-logize? Apologizing would be like admitting defeat. Everybody is entitled to their oppo-nion and you should never feel bad for voicing it regardless of which side you are on. It was a little out of hand, yes, but I think some fun was had.

As long as we stay Oppo, I'm good.

It got out of hand, yes, but it was all in good fun. It is over now and back to car related posts. I'll do my best to keep it in the replies.

It's cool with me, as long as you recognize what was wrong with it. But if you do, then what was the point of this post? Did I miss something?

The very vast majority of us are not professional journalists. Even on the best days there is a lot of off topic material on here. The point is Oppo is here for fun. So when a bunch of folks get off topic for a while at the same time and are having fun with it, there's no need to rain on the parade and whine. To put it in car terms, it's like the people who purposely get in the left lane to keep people from doing 10 over the limit or the person who calls the cops on a party. Yes, it takes up space on the page... But it honestly takes less than 30 seconds for me to sift and scroll through a page or two of one line posts, and about a minute (unless I break to read one) to get to the "load more stories" button even when there are relevant articles. All while using the two fingered tap and scroll method on my laptops touch pad. And even then I'm only interested in half or so and moderately interested in another quarter, at best.

Yeah, but it really sucks for anyone who posts something worthwhile only to get it bumped down by a bunch of crap, because a lot of times people just get on and skim the first page of posts and don't bother to scroll further. Not because they're lazy, but because they shouldn't have to sift through that much to begin with. Oppo has a pretty predictable amount of content most days, so you generally know that if you haven't been on for a couple of hours, you're probably only maybe 2 pages behind.

But anyway, you can say it only takes 30 seconds to scroll through, and that's very true, but it doesn't stop the fact that it's a rule here, and you just don't do it. Those posts seem to have gotten a max of 4 recommends and maybe a couple of comments. Doesn't seem like everyone was in on the fun.

Show me this oppo book of rules and I'll read it.

Another pro tip. If your worthwhile post gets buried at night by a dance party (or tonight's word game [or doesn't get enough attention cause everyone's sleeping]), open your post, click on edit, click on publish, click scheduled, and set it for a minute or two into the future. Voila! Back on top with all of your recommends and comment threads still in tact. I use the scheduled feature pretty often. I know night time is when the crazies come out and there's generally less traffic. So I'll write up a post and schedule it for around 11:00 or so the next day when there is more traffic. Bam. Hope that doesn't break the rules.

Dude, it's just a rule. Always has been. It's not written anywhere obviously, but I've seen the mods enforce it. You've been around long enough to know, and arguing the point isn't going to make a bit of difference. Just don't do it.

You admit the scrolling is no big deal and I point out the ways to get around the problem of getting buried. I've been around long enough, sure. I've never seen such a shit storm over dance parties, keep oppo weird nights, or even dumb themes. But whatever, it won't happen again. I've gotten it out of my system.

There's no need to get all uppity about it. It wasn't just you who did the play-on-oppositelock-name posts (I don't know who started it) so don't get all offended.

You want a moderators perspective? If you post multiple posts in a row, which have no positive replies and are encouraging others to post simialarly, if we are around, we'll step in. The unspoken rules have been spoken at times but basically they are, don't be a dick, nsfw in the replies, no spam, no personal attacks, no troll parties.

When a whole bunch of nonsensical posts go up, in the space of 30 minutes, it means that people who check into Oppo on their mobile (sometimes with slower connection speeds) or at work may not scroll past it because it would take up time. Am I saying don't have fun? No. We've had gif dance parties for as long as I've been around. But it wasn't always a regular thing, and some of this stuff seems forced.

We like wordplay. We like fun. We like beer. And planes, and other Internet sites and music and well... Everything else. And that makes us Oppo. What I am saying is that while you have valid points, if one or two people are taking up the majority of the entire first 20 posts on Oppo, you will get told to stop. Unless you've been saving up a cache of stories and pictures and each of them is strong enough to stand on their own and not be posted together.

Hell, even then someone will question your motive. But I won't. =)
